CURRENT EVENTS WINEGROWING AREA WINES AND WINEGROWERS WINE TRADE ASSOCIATION THE WINE HOUSE HOSPITALLERS

The Pomerol Wine Trade Association, a young centenarian

The Wine and Agricultural Trade Association of Pomerol was established in 1900 and when reading out the surnames of its founders we find some familiar names: those of the grandfathers and great-grandfathers of today’s wine producers.

From this period onwards, the people in charge assigned a dual role to the trade association orienting its policies towards sharing techniques for improving the appellation’s quality and towards its protection too.

Their aim was to prevent producers in neighbouring communes from “stamping the name Pomerol on their barrels of wine.”

An approach such as this is completely in line with the current strategy for A.O.C. (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée), which guarantees the authenticity of the product on sale within the appellation area.

So by the decree of 1935, which formalised the establishment of the A.O.C. by the French Institute of Appellations of Origin (INAO), it was easy for Pomerol to determine the precise boundaries for its appellation area and its rules and regulations.

The National Committee of the I.N.A.O. just had to validate the work which had been accomplished for many decades by the Wine and Agricultural Trade Association of Pomerol.
